Holy Saturday’s official 2013 events centered around the Pascal vigil, one of the most important liturgies of the church year, at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Nearby, however, another remarkable event was taking place. Early that evening, on the steps of Santa Efigênia, the church built on a separate hill by Chico Rey and other former slaves, a youth group gathered in the rain to perform the passion story. The stage was the steep stone staircase leading up to the church. Rock musicians provided some background music. A young man from nearby served as director. The quality and enthusiasm of the production were high. One of the most amazing things was the process. Youth in the production got together to read and share the gospel, and were given space to improvise their lines based on their own interpretations of it. By the time of the scene at Calvary, rain was falling hard, but it did not stop the production at all.
